“Just Like Old Times”
Saturn Girl smiled at Superboy. "Are you all right?" she asked. "Saturn Girl?" he asked. "What's going on here?" "That's what I'd like to know." Cassie Sandsmark was getting more annoyed by the second. What happened next only pushed her even closer to the edge. "He's here!" three voices called out in chorus. Triplicate Girl pushed past Cassie and grabbed onto Superboy, who valiantly tried to fight off the kisses. "Um, Cas?" he asked. "You do see that I'm not doing anything to provoke this, right?" Cassie's only response was to glare a hole through him. "I'm in trouble, right?" "Get your `friends' and get out of my house, Kyle," Cassie said. "Maybe they'll enjoy dinner, because I've lost my appetite!!" "Great," Superboy said. He turned to Saturn Girl. "Let's get out of here." Saturn Girl nodded. "Let's," she said. The Legion filed out onto the porch and they all took off, leaving a sobbing Cassie Sandsmark behind. "My apologies," Saturn Girl said once they were airborne. "We didn't mean to cause you any problems." "Yeah," Superboy said. "What're you doing here? Why'd you go to Cassie's house?" Saturn Girl looked a little uncomfortable. "We tried to locate you in Hawaii, but a friend of yours, Hillary Chang, said that you'd left. We saw some news coverage that showed that you and Wonder Girl are close, and, well, we followed her home." Superboy led the others to land in an empty field. "How'd you pull that off?" he asked. "Cassie's always careful not to let anyone track her." Saturn Girl turned to a Legionnaire in a brown jumpsuit and a headband. "Superboy, meet Lyle Norg. The Invisible Kid." Lyle stepped forward and clasped Superboy's hand. "Good to meet you," he said. Superboy studied the rest of the group. "I recognize Triad, but who are the others?" Saturn Girl smiled. "Let me make the introductions." She pointed to a red-haired man in a blue uniform. "This is Garth Ranzz. Lightning Lad." Superboy smiled as he recognized someone else. "Valor?" he asked. "I thought that he was dying!*" (*Superboy fought Valor in Superboy #18 - db) Valor smiled. "I got patched up," he replied. "And the name's Mon-El, now." "Mon-El," Superboy said. "Kinda like mine." Mon-El nodded. "Yes. We both got our Kryptonian names from Superman. Or will get, in my case." "Cool," Superboy said. "Who else is here?" Saturn Girl pointed to a man in a red shirt with a green bird on the front. "Jo Nah. Ultra Boy." She then pointed to a chunky young man in a blue shirt. "Chuck Taine. Brainy was tied up, so Chuck's our technical guru for this visit." Superboy greeted the other Legionnaires. "So what's going on?" he asked. "Don't tell me you're stuck here again." "Not hardly," Lightning Lad said. He chuckled. "This is going to sound kind of silly, but we're on vacation. We decided that we just wanted to come back and visit the old twenty-first century for a while. Cosmic Boy and Chameleon Boy wanted to come with us, but they were both in the middle of some difficult work." "Cool," Superboy said as he took off again. "Let's go check out Cadmus. That's where I'm living now. I'm sure that the Mickster can set you all up with some guest rooms." "That would be great," Invisible Kid said. "I've been looking forward to this for a long time!" The group of friends took off and started flying toward Cadmus. An empty bottle of aspirin lay on Dubbilex's desk. Over the past week, Dubbilex's head problems had grown from a mild tickle to a splitting headache. Dubbilex closed his eyes and tried to meditate through the pain. Suddenly his eyes shot open and he screamed! An instant later, he'd collapsed to the floor. "Dubbilex?" Roy Harper asked as he entered the room. "Are you okay?" I thought I heard..." Harper stopped speaking as he saw Dubbilex slumped over his desk. Harper sprinted to an intercom and started paging for medical assistance. As quickly as his leg brace would allow, Mickey Cannon hurried toward the med labs. The door swung open and he headed straight for Serling Roquette. "How is he?" he asked. Roquette didn't even look up from her medical monitors. "I've never seen anything like this," she replied. "It's as if he's suffered a severe mental shock, but there's no evidence of anything that caused it!" Cannon rubbed his chin. "Harper said he spotted some pills on Dub's desk. Think that might be tied in somehow?" Serling nodded. "Ever since we got back here, Dubbilex has been complaining of headaches. He said that as time went by, they just got worse. I'd like to have security sweep the base to make sure we don't have an intruder." Cannon nodded once. "Agreed. I'll have Harper get started on it immediately. Keep me informed on his condition." "Right." Serling still didn't look up as Cannon walked out. Superboy looked down as he heard an odd jingling sound. "Something wrong?" Mon-El asked. Superboy shook his head. "Nah. Just my cell phone." He took the phone off his belt and turned it on. "Yo!" he said. "Superboy!" a familiar voice said. "This is Sam Makoa, Honolulu PD." "Makoa!" Superboy said as a smile spread across his face. "What's going on?" "Trouble," Makoa replied. "There's been a breakout down here. Silver Sword is one of the criminals who got away." "So?" Superboy asked. "I'm sure you guys will catch up with him soon." "That's the problem. Did you know that the Metro Museum in Metropolis is hosting an exhibit on Hawaiian culture? The Spear of Lono is in that exhibit! We believe that Silver Sword's going to make a grab at it!" "Got it," Superboy said. "Don't worry. I've got some backup this time. We'll have him caught in no time." "Superboy, wait!" Makoa urgently said through bursts of static. "You need to know who else is on the loose! We also lost-" *BEEPBEEPBEEP* "Makoa? Makoa?" Superboy asked. He glanced down and checked his phone. "What's wrong?" Taine asked as he flew up beside Superboy. "My battery's dead," Superboy said as he returned the phone to his belt. "No biggie. I'll just drop it off at Cadmus on the way." In Honolulu, Detective Sam Makoa was still yelling into the telephone. "Superboy! Superboy!" Finally he slammed the phone down in disgust. "Some things never change," he muttered as he sat down at his desk. Roy Harper stepped forward as Superboy and the Legion landed. After quick introductions, Roy led the Legionnaires off to locate some extra rooms. Superboy ducked into his room. He clipped his phone into the charger and quickly changed to his Superboy uniform. He hurried back to the docking bay and found the Legion. "Are they all set?" he asked Roy. Harper nodded. "Yeah. We've got them all settled down in some guest rooms." "Great," Superboy said. "We'll be back later. We've just got an old friend to take care of first." As one, they launched into flight. "I'm looking forward to this," Ultra Boy said. "I remember our last run-in with him*. That's not going to happen again." (Superboy # 45 - db) "Don't worry about it," Superboy said. "With all of us, this shouldn't be much of a problem." "You don't understand," Ultra Boy said firmly. "I hope that he is a problem." Ultra Boy punched his fist into his other hand. "I need to let some tension out." "You know, they make Prozac for that," Superboy said under his breath. He pulled up short as a burst of flame shot up into the sky. "Hey, guys? I get the funny feeling that Silver Sword's made it here," Superboy said before leading them on to the scene of the blast. "At last!" Silver Sword exclaimed as he punched through the glass of the case. "This does not belong here with all of these haoles! This was a gift to Hawaii, and I shall return it there!" "Real nice speech, Silvy." Silver Sword whirled around and saw Superboy hovering there, clapping sarcastically. "Now why don't you put that back, and then we can talk about this." "Never!" Silver Sword yelled as the silver metal that covered him shot toward Superboy. "I'm taking this home with me!" Superboy was preparing to dodge the blade that was streaking toward him when a red and blue mass appeared before him. "Then we have a problem," Mon-El said. "Who are you?" Silver Sword demanded. "Does it matter?" Mon-El asked as he grabbed the blade and snapped it off. Ignoring Silver Sword's scream, Mon-El dropped the piece of metal and started toward him. "All that matters is that you may have killed a lot of people today." "People?" Silver Sword asked, grabbing his wrist. "Don't talk to me about killing people!" Mon-El barely dodged as blades streaked toward him and skewered the cheaply-made huts that served as the exhibit's background. "Wait a second!" Superboy yelled. "You're just getting him upset! You don't have to do this!" Saturn Girl grabbed his arm. "Yes, we do." Triplicate Girl showed up at his other side. "Don't worry," she whispered into his ear. "We know what we're doing." She grabbed his other arm after lightly licking his ear. Invisible Kid grabbed Superboy around the chest and held him back. "Trust us," he said. Silver Sword screamed again as the metal on his back liquefied. Ultra Boy soared into sight after shutting off his heat vision. "You don't understand what you're doing!" Silver Sword tried to protest. "Wrong," Lightning Lad said. "We know exactly what we're doing." He raised his hands and discharged lightning bolts into Silver Sword's body. Silver Sword collapsed, writhing in pain. "Got it!" Saturn Girl yelled. An instant later, Silver Sword stopped moving. "Chuck, go invite the police in. Tell them the situation's under control." Superboy strode forward and grabbed Saturn Girl's arm. "No, it isn't!" he said. "You could have killed him! I tried to tell you that I could talk him down! We didn't have to fight like this! What's happened to all of you?" Superboy screamed as Mon-El and Ultra Boy fired their heat vision into his back. Superboy fell to the ground, his jacket smoldering. Saturn Girl's mouth twitched upward in a cruel smile. "Yes. I believe that some explanations may be in order." She started laughing as the Legion formed ranks around her. Next Issue: What the?
